The Fortune 500 is an annual list compiled by Fortune magazine. It ranks the top 500 U.S. companies by total revenue and is typically released around this time each year. The list includes both publicly traded and privately held companies. This differs from the ranking mechanism for the S&P 500, the commonly used benchmark for stock market performance, which only includes publicly traded companies, that ranks companies based on their market capitalization.
