G-20 finance ministers meet. Finance ministers and central bank governors from G-20 countries will meet April 20 in Washington, when they are expected to discuss global financial issues including rising inflation.

A Red Sea maritime operation targets the Houthis. A U.S. Navy Red Sea task force will begin operating April 17 in the waters near the Bab el-Mandeb. The task force is part of the 34-nation Combined Maritime Forces, and will be tasked with patrolling against drug smuggling and human trafficking.

A political crisis in Sri Lanka continues. Sri Lanka’s main opposition party, Samagi Jana Balawegaya, will likely submit a no-confidence motion against the government and an impeachment motion against the president in the parliamentary session that starts April 19.

Mexico’s legislature considers electricity reform. Mexico’s lower house of Congress will debate and vote on a proposed constitutional reform that would boost the state-owned Federal Electricity Commission at the expense of privately owned competitors in the electricity sector.

  • 22Q1 Y/Y earnings are expected to be 6.3%. Excluding the energy sector, the Y/Y earnings estimate is 0.7%.
  • Of the 34 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings to date for 22Q1, 79.4% have reported earnings above analyst estimates. This compares to a long-term average of 66% and prior four quarter average of 83.1%.
  • During the week of Apr. 18, 69 S&P 500 companies are expected to report quarterly earnings.
