Viral Fallout. The deadly coronavirus keeps spreading in China and across the globe, and as it does so it risks causing major supply chain disruptions as domestic businesses, multinational corporations and airliners rush to adapt to the outbreak.
Trump’s State of the Union Address. With his impeachment trial in the U.S. Senate likely behind him, it’s unclear if U.S. President Donald Trump will take a victory lap on Feb. 4 when he delivers this year’s State of the Union speech and admonish congressional Democrats or take the high road and address his comments more to the American public by setting out the case for his reelection in November.
South Africa’s Eskom Struggles to Keep the Lights On. Embattled South African state electricity utility Eskom announced level 2 load shedding on Jan. 30, stating that the forced power cuts will continue until Feb. 3.
Iran Celebrates Its Revolution. Iran will be holding 10 days of celebrations from Feb. 1 to Feb. 11 to mark the anniversary of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s return to Iran in 1979 and the Islamic Revolution.

Aggregate Estimates and Revisions
- Fourth quarter earnings are expected to decrease 1.1% from 18Q4. Excluding the energy sector, the earnings growth estimate is 3.9%.
- Of the 226 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings to date for 19Q4, 69.5% have reported earnings above analyst expectations. This compares to a long-term average of 65% and prior four quarter average of 74%.
- 19Q4 revenue is expected to increase 4.7% from 18Q4. Excluding the energy sector, the growth estimate is 5.9%.
