The US Dollar has been in a bullish phase since April of 2014. This rally occurred after a 3 year consolidation period where the value of the US Dollar versus a basket of the other major currencies bounced around in a depressed trading range. Out of essentially nowhere, the value of the US Dollar took off to the upside.
