The Week Ahead | 12/10/2018

Global Spotlight

The Brexit Test. Just one day before a fateful parliamentary vote on the Brexit withdrawal agreement, the European Court of Justice on Dec. 10 will rule whether the United Kingdom can unilaterally revoke the Article 50 Brexit process.

Taking Aim at a Chinese Tech Juggernaut. Even as the announcement of a 90-day trade truce between the United States and China spread some cautious relief at the start of the week, the Dec. 1 arrest of Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Chinese tech giant Huawei, in Vancouver at the request of the United States over alleged Iran sanctions violations ended the week on a much more somber note.

Macron’s Misfortunes Rise. The Great Reformer of the European Union was bound to hit a political tsunami. After weeks of large demonstrations against the government, French President Emmanuel Macron is scrapping a plan to raise fuel taxes to avoid feeding the perception that he is the globalist president for the elite.

King Salman Watch. A Saudi social media watcher reporting an increase in the presence of royal court guards around King Salman has ignited the Saudi rumor mill on the leader’s health.

The U.S.-Russia Arms Race Is Still On. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a 60-day arms control ultimatum to Russia to fully comply with the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), or else the United States would initiate formal proceedings to withdraw from the INF. A U.S. withdrawal is still very likely; the White House is essentially going through the motions to demonstrate to the Europeans its attempts to bring Russia to the table, but of course Russia did not bite.
