Global Spotlight
Saudi Royal Pains. The White House is coordinating closely with embattled Saudi leaders in trying to contain the fallout from the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
Tokyo and Beijing Try to Find Common Ground. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will make a landmark state visit to China on Oct. 25 to meet with President Xi Jinping.
Mexico’s Messy Referendum Gamble. Mexico’s President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is trying to haphazardly force a national referendum Oct. 25-28 on whether to continue building Mexico City’s new airport, a project plagued by corruption-related cost overruns.
The Great Big Orthodox Chasm. The Russian Orthodox Church announced on Oct. 15 that it would break off all relations with the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul), marking one of the biggest schisms in the Orthodox world in the past millennium.
Brexit Watch. There are three key points to take away from an especially noisy Brexit week. First, the European Union now wants a “backstop to the backstop” to make sure Northern Ireland remains in the customs union even if the United Kingdom leaves it. Second, the European Union and the United Kingdom are open to the idea of extending the transition period for another year, until December 2021. And third, Spain and the United Kingdom have at least reached an agreement on Gibraltar, giving London one less thing to worry about in navigating the mess ahead.
Italy’s Long, Long Battle With Brussels Ahead. As expected, the European Commission is not happy with Italy’s final budget proposal. And while there is pressure coming from Germany’s Northern European allies to make an example of Italy, you can never underestimate the exceptional ability of the European Union to avoid confrontation and drag out timelines.
