Mises Moment | The Founding Fathers: Smugglers, Tax Evaders, and Traitors

The 4th of July means different things to many people. For some of us it is a celebration of our independence from the Crown, British Empire, call it what you will. For others, it is just another excuse to party and drink beer. For others a day to see an awesome fireworks display.  I am often saddened that the kids in school are not taught the true history of the process that took place that brought about our independence. Many sacrificed greatly to create the country we live in. The movement to independence started long before 1,776. It started when people got on a  boat and fled Europe.

Mr. Richard J. Maybury writes on investments and has written 22 books and monographs, including Whatever Happened to Penny Candy? and his Uncle Eric series of books, which focus on economics, law, and history. He has written an interesting article about Americas Day of Independence, and what it was like for people to come to North America. In a time where we all have smartphones, WiFi, cars with air conditioning, etc. and all kinds of other comforts of modern life, it is easy to forget what people had to go through to get here and not die along the way. And once here, the intense struggle to survive. This article is a reprint of an article posted on Mises.Org. You can find the original article here along with peoples comments.

Happy Independence day everyone!
