The Week Ahead 06/04/2018

Global Spotlight

“Getting to Know You Meeting — Plus.” It’s official (well, for now): U.S. President Donald Trump will meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on June 12 in Singapore.

The Rebels in Southern Europe. Brussels patronizingly told Rome that the markets would teach Italy a lesson, but did Brussels learn its lesson? After a turbulent week, Italy was left where it started, with a populist government led by the Five Star Movement and League party.

U.S. Protectionism Steels the Show. The White House pelted U.S. allies Mexico, Canada and the European Union with tariffs on steel and aluminum, forcing each to respond in kind with their own countermeasures.

Poland’s Quest for Permanent Security. Poland is in serious talks with the United States about permanently stationing U.S. troops on Polish territory.

Russia Trying to Play Mediator in Syria, Again. Russia and Israel have been negotiating a plan that would reduce the Iranian and Hezbollah presence in southwestern Syria.
