The Week Ahead 05/07/2018

What to Watch for this Week

This week the economic calendar is normal, with emphasis on labor markets and inflation.  Earnings season continues to surprise most analysts, but the market just does not want to respond one way or the other this past week.

In addition to the Kentucky Derby, the big analysis will be from the annual Berkshire Hathaway meeitng that took place last weekend in Omaha, Nebraska.  Warren Buffet, Charlie Munger, and Bill Gates treated us, through CNBC, what they thought the market is up to and how they would invest.  Here is the coveted letter that everyone will be talking about this week. Letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders.

Global Spotlight

A Negotiation of Non-Starters. There was little sign of compromise in Beijing on May 3 and 4 when a U.S. delegation presented China with a long list of tall demands, ranging from reducing the U.S. trade deficit with China by $200 billion by 2020 to cutting off state support to all Made in China 2025 sectors to a ban on Chinese trade retaliation.

D-Day for JCPOA. The May 12 deadline that the United States put on the Europeans to “fix” the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with Iran is upon us. U.S. President Donald Trump’s nod to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s spectacular April 30 Power Point presentation on Iranian deception has only reinforced the expectation that Trump will pull back from the nuclear deal that he has long lambasted.

Putin’s Balancing Act. Russian President Vladimir Putin is keeping his own seat warm for his May 7 inauguration. Now entering his fourth term, Putin has a mess of issues to deal with, including persistent protest and sanctions pressure.
